My partners, Mikey Woods (RIP) and Timmy Bowden used to gather at the same VFW Post as Jan. We soon became friends and often engaged in sibling like rivalries over the merits of the NYPD vs The Housing PD. Jan was a LT. in HPD, so of course we some fun at his expense. I was also on duty when the call came in "officer down" I never in a million years thought that it would be Jan. He died a hero. Cops often brag about wanting to "go out in a blaze of glory" Well, Jan did.

I worked with & for Lt Jan Brinkers when we were both assigned in Harlem. Jan had a way about himself that I have not seen in any man since. He was such a smart & decent man who I greatly admired. One thing that I remember most is that he always liked to have me as his driver because I typed. At the end of our tour I would have a list of all the locations we visited & would type his daily reports for him. Being that he was a Lt. he never took any notes nor did he write anything down. The GREAT relationship we had was I depended upon him for guidance & he depended upon me for the paperwork. A GREAT Guy who I think about daily. I THANK GOD for the friendship we had. May you rest in peace ~ Jan Brinkers. Detective Kerry Schacht (Retired)
