| I knew John just as an acquaintance from our Astoria, Queens neighborhood. He grew up only a block or two away from me so we would often run into each other. We had some mutual friends, however he was a bit older then me so we never really hung out much. I was about 19 years old when I remember John getting on the job. I envied him because it was such a big deal to me since I also wanted to be a cop ever since I was little kid. I did get on the job in 1984, a year after John fell from the eleveted train at the Ditmars Blvd. stop in Astoria. His untimely death really haunted me then, and still does to this day, seven years after retireing from the 94PDU. I'm fifty years old now and I still remember John as if it were yesterday. In my mind I can still see him walking to that same subway train on his way to work, as he regularly did. My house as a kid was only a block from that same train station and he would wave hi to me as he passed by. Unbeknownst to John, he was a mentor to me because I wanted to be a cop like him more than anything else in the world. I'm sad that he never got to see me complete my dream. Our age difference kept us from becoming buddies as kids, but it would have been nice if we two neighborhood kids could have bonded over becoming New York City Police Officers. I know that John would have taken me under his wing back then and shown me a bit of the ropes, not just because we were both cops, but because we were two kids from the same neighborhood. I never got to really know you John, but you made a big impression on me in your short life. I'm still shocked and saddened about your death nearly thirty years later. Sleep well friend.
