Rank: P.O.

Shield #: 14339 Command: 040 Pct.
Date of Death: 1984-06-15   Cause of Death: Shot-Robbery-Arrest

Officer Andino was shot and killed while questing a man suspected of stealing a pair of eyeglass frames from a shop. Officer Andino was walking his beat on 3rd Avenue near 149th Street in the Bronx when he was approached by a shopkeeper that informed him that a man had entered his store and taken a pair of eyeglass frames. As Officer Andino and the storekeeper were walking back to the store so Officer Andino could take a report, the shopkeeper spotted the suspect. Officer Andino approached the suspect and had him accompany him back into the store so he could investigate the complaint.

While Officer Andino was questioning the suspect, the suspect attacked him and was able to gain control of his gun. The suspect then fired three round, two of which struck Officer Andino in the head. Another Officer, who was walking a nearby beat, heard the shots and entered the store. She shot and wounded the suspect and with the help of a third Officer, took the suspect into custody. The suspect was later convicted of 1st degree murder and sentenced to 25 years to life in prison. He is eligible for parole in June of 2009.

Officer Andino was removed to Lincoln Hospital where he died from his wounds. He had been a member of the New York City Police Department for 11 years.

I had taken the Police Test in 1982 while living in the Bronx. I scored well and my list number had been called. I was sitting on the fence about coming on "The Job". Then I read about Officer Andino's shooting. After absorbing the magnitude of his sacrifice and realizing he must have been dedicated and that he stood for something. And that something must be special. I decided to come on "The Job". Even to this day, I love my job. I love what I do. I often think of him and realize that he pushed me off the fence. I thank God for Juan Andino, for it was his example, his leading the way that I am today a proud member of the New York City Police Department.

I worked in the 42 Precinct with Juan. We worked several details together. I remember one in particular. I was assigned to drive a van load of officers from the 42 to a post for the Harlem Day Parade. Juan was one of the other 5 officers. The parade was wonderful and trouble free. There was much merriment and I thank Juan for volunteering to drive us back to the 42 at the end of the tour. We had many laughs as good friends and officers will. I was later transferred to the 52 Precinct and was devestated when I heard of Juan's untimley death. Thank you Juan for the laughs and the friendship.

I remember that day...All for a pair of "Gazzelles" those fancy thick framed ugly glasses kids used in the 80's. They cost around $150. I thought it was a shame then as I still do. Rest in peace officer Andino. You'd be ejoying your retirement now.

I was working precinct warrants with my partner Hector Faliciano the day Juan was shot. My partner and I were driving back to the 40 when we spotted Juan, we pulled over and Chatted for a while with him. When we got back to the 40, we notice everyone was running out, this was only minutes after we left Juan and then we heard the tragic news that a P.O. was shot at 149 and third. Juan was a good friend and a great Police Officer. Juan and I lived not far from each other in the 43 and we enjoyed going out dancing. May he rest in peace, with all the other NYPD Angels.
