 Detective Kevin G. Hawkins died May 7, 2007 of kidney cancer, which he contracted after inhaling toxic chemicals and materials while working hundreds of hours at Ground Zero, the site of the World Trade Center terrorist attack of 9/11. Detective Hawkins served over 20 years with the Department. He worked in the 17th Precinct, the Executive Protection Unit of the Intelligence Division, and the Patrol Borough Manhattan South Task Force, as well as in the rescue, recovery and clean-up effort at the World Trade Center site. Detective Hawkins was recognized three times for excellent police duty and meritorious service. He is survived by his wife Marie and daughters Natalie and Stephanie, mother Dorothy and brother Dave.

Kevin was a not only a great cop but also a great guy.He had an amazingly sharp wit and ALWAYS had a great comeback when we would joke around.When I was a rookie with just a year on ('93)and I was assigned to the MSTF he was one of the older guys that would talk to you.I will never forget that.God Bless Kevin and God Bless his family.

Kev was my Older Brother. He was an incredible influence on my life. He was "Life of the Party" and always had a smile. He was my "Hero" growing up and my life. There is not a day that i don't talk to him or think about him. I love you Kev and Miss you!

I went to grammar school with Kevin. When we were kids he was a friend and someone who was fun to be around. God bless him. Kevin was a great guy.

Kevin was my friend, I watched him grow up on 109 Ave. in So. Ozone park Queens. He would give you the shirt off his back. The world lost a good person...

Hi, I used to work with Kevin in the 17pct. All I can say is God Bless Kevin in Heaven and God Bless his family here on earth. I know he has been missed.

Det Hawkins you got sick trying to rescue and recover fellow NYers ,it was a task that those of us that were there are the only ones who understand. Even though you passed you will never be forgotten. Rest in Peace Kevin
