|||
| Shield #: 25539 | Command: Brooklyn South Task Force | |||
| Date of Death: 1989-03-03 | Cause of Death: Shot-Auto Check | |||
| Plainclothes Officer Robert Machate was fatally shot in the Flatbush section of Brooklyn. Machate was shot after he and his partner, Gustavo Ceccini, approached a group of men who appeared to be having a dispute on East 23rd Street off Newkirk Avenue. Police said a struggle ensued between Reynaldo Rayside and Robert Machate.The police said Rayside grabbed the officer's .38-caliber revolver during the struggle and shot Machate once in the abdomen.
Arrested were Renaldo Rayside, 23, of Crown Heights and Kurt Haneipah, 22, of Flatbush. Rayside was charged with first and second-degree attempted murder, first-degree robbery, grand larceny, escape and felony weapons possession. Kurt Haneiph, who was with Renaldo Rayside when the shooting occurred, made a statement implicating Rayside as the gunman. Haneiph was charged with felony assault of a police officer and possession of a weapon. A Brooklyn jury acquitted Renaldo Rayside of murder in the slaying of Police Officer Robert Machate. Robert Machate was 25 years old. He joined the force on July 15, 1986. He had received two commendations and 11 awards for excellent police duty. Both commendations, as well as the five he had pending, were for gun-related arrests. |

| While assigned to the Kings Warrant Squad, I was assigned a number of warrants on arrests that Bob made. He always included extra information on the perp and a warning to "be careful, he's a bad guy" when he felt it was appropiate. A nice touch from a good cop. I pray he is resting in peace. | ||||

| I was like a uncle to Robert Jr.,his sister and brother.I would sit in the kitchen with Bob Sr telling war stories. Bob Jr said that i was inspiration and he wanted to be like me. I pray that I wasn't the one that led him into the life he chose which led to his death. Robert Jr was a good cop (better than I could ever hope to be) | ||||

| It's been twenty years and I still rememebr like it was yesterday. You were a brave man in a city that doesn't exist the way it did. I don't think the new generation will ever understand how much courage it took to do what you did but I know I will never forget. | ||||

| Bobby was a great guy with a big heart and a great sense of humor, he would do anything to help a friend, he really felt good about taking bad guys off the street. It's hard to believe he is gone so long, he will not be forgotten. | ||||
