| There was a fire in the basement of a private house on Essex St. between Delancey and Rivington Streets at approximately 0600 hrs on May 31, 1853. Shadow Trenchard, while fighting the fire, fell through the grating into the basement of the fire building and received a contusion to the back of the head, plus other injuries and was very badly burned. He died three days later on June 2, 1853. | ||||
