 Patrolman Teare died of gunshot wounds he received when he responded to the scene of a shooting in which Patrolman William Heaney was killed. When Patrolman Teare arrived he observed the suspect with a smoking revolver and when he attempted to disarm the suspect, the suspect fired two shots wounding Patrolman Teare. Patrolman Teare was removed to St. Vincent's Hospital where he died the next day from his wounds.

The suspect was apprehended several days later and was convicted of murder.

Patrolman Teare had been a member of the New York City Police Department for 12 years. He was 36 years old.

According to a news clipping, dated May 4, 1914, ..."patrolman of the Mulberry street station, shot and killed on May 3, 1913, in fron tof No. 243 Mulberry street attempting to arrest Oresto Sciallitani, who had killed John Rizzo."

PO Teare you died coming to the aid of a fellow officer who was coming to the aid of a stranger, even though you passed you will never be forgotten. Rest in Peace Charles
