 On July 25, 1924 at about 2:00 AM while on patrol, Patrolman Hyland was infomred of a hold up that had been committed at Lefferts Avenue between Bedford and Rogers Avenues, Brooklyn. The complainant identified his automobile being driving on Empire Blvd. Patrolman Hyland ordered the driver to stop. Two men alighted, shots were fired. Although mortally wounded Patrolman Hyman shot five times at his escaping assailants. Hyland died three dates later on July 28.

Patroman Hyland was assigned to the 42-A Precinct which later became the 80 Pct. It was abolished in 1972.
